Administrative Intern

Internship Expectations

Administrative interns will work closely with the staff of eighth blackbird Performing Arts Association in all areas of nonprofit management, including day to day operations, fundraising, development, and marketing.

eighth blackbird considers interns part of its staff, capable of making significant contributions to the organization. As such, they should be prepared for the responsibility this entails. Expectations are high; we offer meaningful tasks and independence in proportion to interns’ demonstrated abilities. Supervision is offered to overcome barriers, provide direction and resources, and to develop judgment.

Duties may include:

  • Creation, maintenance, editing and filing of official records, meeting agendas and minutes, databases (including contacts, programs, performances, donations, etc.); merchandise and merchandise sales, etc.
  • Coordinating and attending quarterly meetings of Board of Directors, including confirming meeting space, distributing materials, gathering RSVPs, taking minutes, etc.
  • Participating in all activities associated with eighth blackbird’s Chicago concerts, including attending development, marketing, and technical meetings.
  • Assist in travel and lodging arrangements for ensemble
  • Creating an audio database of past and current recordings
  • Serve as a catch-all administrative assistant for our residency at Museum of Contemporary Art and be on site when needed
  • Maintain inventory for large sheet music library

Skills & Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is organized, self-sufficient, motivated, tech-savvy, and has an interest in entrepreneurship, arts administration, and music.  The intern will work 10+ hours per week, starting ASAP through December 2015; specific end date is flexible. Must commit to coming into the office or our space at the Museum of Contemporary Art two days per week. Compensation is $375 for the entire internship.

The best interns tend to be self-motivated, resourceful, and able to work alone as well as with others. eighth blackbird will try to match interns with undertakings that parallel their interests and skills while also meeting the organization’s needs. We believe there is value in being well-organized, asking questions, approaching obstacles creatively, learning from one another and, perhaps most importantly, having fun while pursuing our goals.

Interested applicants should note at the outset that this is an administrative internship and that the ensemble frequently tours.  While any extended internship will provide opportunities for attending rehearsals, concerts, administrative and artistic meetings, most work will be either independent or with the administrative staff.

We strive to make the experience as worthwhile as possible. Successful intern candidates are encouraged to consider what skills they have to offer, as well as what they are looking to receive from such an experience. If the internship was productive and positive, eighth blackbird will happily serve as a reference for future job possibilities.
