   
SPRING 2012 INTERNSHIPS
eighth blackbird is a world class arts organization that is growing rapidly, with artistic possibilities currently outpacing administrative capacity. The ensemble is seeking one administrative intern and one production intern for spring 2012 to pursue a range of important activities that assist eighth blackbird advance its mission while also giving interns important, hands-on arts administration/ production experience. eighth blackbird was founded in 1996 and performs new works by American and international composers. By cultivating highly skillful, engaging performances, commissioning groundbreaking new works, and educating young musicians, students and the general public, the ensemble advances the cause of contemporary classical music.
SPRING 2012 ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIP
APPLICATION MATERIALS DUE: Friday 01/20/12 (see attached application for details)
DATES: starts late Jan - ends late May 2012
HOURS: Part Time: approximately 10 hours per week (flexible scheduling) Full Time: For the right candidate, short term full time internships are available, inquire if interested.
LOCATION/ EQUIPMENT: Our office and studio are located in the Ravenswood neighborhood on Chicago’s north side. It is possible to work from home if needed, all interns must provide their own laptop.
EXPECTATIONS:
The administrative intern will work closely with the Operations Manager and Managing Director of eighth blackbird Performing Arts Association in all areas of nonprofit management, including day-to-day operations, fundraising, development, publicity and marketing.
eighth blackbird considers interns part of its administrative staff, contributing significantly to the running of the organization. The organization offers meaningful tasks and independence in proportion to interns' demonstrated abilities. Supervision is offered to overcome barriers, provide direction and resources, and to develop judgment. Interns should be self-motivated, resourceful, well-organized, comfortable with seeking assistance, able to approach obstacles creatively, and able to work alone or in a group. eighth blackbird will match interns with work that aligns with their interests and skills.
eighth blackbird is on tour frequently, so while any extended internship will provide opportunities for attending rehearsals, concerts, administrative and artistic meetings, most work will be either independent or in collaboration with the Operations Manager.
COMPENSATION:
All internships are unpaid. We strive to make the experience as worthwhile as possible. Participants are compensated through the experience, knowledge, and connections made available while working. Successful internship candidates are encouraged to consider what skills they have to offer, as well as what they are looking to receive from such an experience. If the internship is productive and positive, eighth blackbird will happily serve as a reference for future job possibilities.
SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties may include:

Creation, maintenance, editing and filing of official records, meeting agendas and minutes, databases (including contacts, programs, performances, donations, etc.), contracts and letters of agreement, merchandise and merchandise sales, etc.

Coordination and attendance at quarterly meetings of Board of Directors (confirming a meeting space, distributing materials, handling RSVPs, taking minutes, etc.)

Participation in all activities associated with eighth blackbird's Chicago concerts (including attendance at development, marketing and technical meetings)

Audience development for eighth blackbird's series at the Museum of Contemporary Art, including but not limited to: identifying contacts at local educational institutions responsible for student activities, creating a database of such contacts, developing audience surveys, collecting contact information, coordinating the promotion of MCA concerts to students through advertisements, ticket giveaways, online media, etc.
SPRING 2012 PRODUCTION INTERNSHIP

HOURS: approximately 5-10 hours per week, varies according to proximity to Chicago
related events (flexible scheduling)
LOCATION/ EQUIPMENT: Our office and studio are located in the Ravenswood neighborhood on Chicago’s north side. It is possible to work from home if needed, all interns must provide their own laptop.
EXPECTATIONS:
The Production intern will work closely with the Production Stage Manager/Lighting Director of eighth blackbird in all areas of concert planning, including day-to-day operations, communications, technical requirements, research, and company management.

Participation in all activities associated with eighth blackbird's Chicago concerts, including attendance at site visits and production meetings, and supporting the company and staff during rehearsals, classes, and public events,

Technical and logistical support for all gig-peripheral crew calls, including opportunities to learn about backstage and front-of-house functions, and Stage Management,
-
Creation, maintenance, editing and filing of databases (including contacts, programs, performances, etc.), contracts and letters of agreement, touring logistics, and technical documents, etc.
