Coming from the orchestral world, having not played chamber music in years, working with eighth blackbird in Switzerland was a real eye-opener for me. I learned about the importance of cueing – how to do it, why we do it, why we can't do too much of it, and how to use it.

about our residency program
Grammy-winning ensemble eighth blackbird is passionate about raising the bar of chamber music performance across the United States. With an innovative range of residency programs, the group actively shares its skill and knowledge to help achieve this goal.
Whether in panel discussions, masterclasses or composition readings, eighth blackbird knows that students must be engaged in order to improve. Acknowledging that one-way lecturing isn’t sufficient, the group believes strongly in close interaction with students.
The ensemble’s mixed instrumentation, familiarity with many artistic disciplines and varied concert repertoire allows it to paint with a diverse musical palette across a broad range of residency activities.
eighth blackbird is lauded for playing from memory with theatrical flair, a uniqueness reflected in several special residency activities: a program where students prepare and perform alongside the ensemble, movement coaching for chamber ensembles and a session on performance aesthetics.
