Residency Activities: In One Location
NOTES: All activities may be open to the general public at the discretion of the presenting organization. Where used, the term “auditors” is defined as non-participatory students and faculty of the institution where the activity takes place and special guests or patrons of the institution or faculty. Parts and scores should be delivered to the ensemble 2 weeks prior to the reading session. (Note: This will allow the ensemble to choose which material to workshop, confirm availability of required instruments and deal with other logistical matters.)
-
See addendum below for additional Reading Session requirements.
II. Reading Session – Complete Works
The ensemble will be prepared to play compositions in their entirety as well as repeat material as needed for recording purposes. NOTE: This reading session does not constitute a public performance of these compositions and may not be advertised as such in any publicity or advertising materials of the institution where the session will be held or of the composers whose work is being read. A public performance of student works may be negotiated separately with eighth blackbird and their management, David Lieberman Artists' Representatives, but is quite rare.

Percussion requirements
-
All required percussion must be set up at the reading venue in time for the reading. This ensures that less time during the session will be devoted to finding instruments and setting up. Any use of eighth blackbird’s instruments must be negotiated in advance with the presenter or the ensemble’s percussionist, Matthew Duvall. Do not assume that the ensemble owns or will bring any of the percussion or percussion accessories (mallets, sticks, bows, triangle beaters, etc.) needed to read your piece.
-
Consult with eighth blackbird’s percussionist, Matthew Duvall, about specific percussion, accessories, notation, or other questions. You can email him at

This should happen well in advance (at least one week) of the reading session.
-
Composers should be conservative with their percussion set-ups. eighth blackbird’s time with each composer will be limited. A minimal percussion set-up will result in a more accurate reading.
-
Composers should provide multiple, unbound percussion parts. This is in case the percussion part requires multiple music stands. Composers should use their best judgment as to how many parts are required.
Part and Score Requirements
-
Include measure numbers in parts and scores.
-
Print paper copies of parts and scores. If possible, please use Finale, Sibelius, or other music notation software.
