Eighth Blackbird will perform as soloists in the world premiere of a new work by Kinds of Kings written for Eighth Blackbird and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and conducted by Ruth Reinhardt. CSO commissioned the new work, which will debut at Cincinnati’s Music Hall on January 16, 2021. Kinds of Kings is a U.S.-based collective of composers focused on amplifying and advocating for underheard voices and producing immersive and inclusive work. Its members include Shelley Washington (U.S.), Gemma Peacocke (New Zealand), Maria Kaoutzani (Cyprus), and Susanna Hancock (U.S.) Peacocke was a 2018 Blackbird Creative Lab Fellow.
According to Kinds of Kings, “This is one of our most exciting project announcements yet; not only do we get to work with a very large group of incredible musicians, but we also get to write a concerto for them with the amazing Eighth Blackbird as soloists. What a dream team!”
For over 125 years, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra has championed the music of its time, giving more than 325 premieres of new music during its storied history. “As much as it is important to constantly commission and perform premieres and write new chapters of music history, it is crucial to also perform contemporary pieces after their premiere, offering to them other interpreters, other audiences, other angles and visions,” said CSO Music Director Louis Langrée.
